The Edelweiss (litterally 'noble white) grows high in the Alps and is regarded in Switzerland as a national symbol. The alpine Edelweiss is found generally at altitudes from 1700m to 2700m. It prefers calcareous light soils with excellent drainage and southern exposure, where it likes to form herbal mats, froweing from 8 to 20cm tall.
